Current Projects:

My research supports the programs and activities of the National Cooperative Soil Survey, especially those occurring within New England. By increasing our knowledge of the nature, properties and genesis of our soils, then better systems of classification can be developed. This leads to better soil maps, surveys and data bases, which are all essential tools for land management and planning. My special interest topics include: (1)the relationship of the soils of New England to glacial stratigraphy and landscape position; (2) the improvement of techniques for classifying the soils that occur in wetlands (hydric soils or soils with aquic moisture regimes); (3) the role of hydric soils in wetland ecosystems; and (4) the improvement of soil survey interpretations.
