EDUCATION
Ph.D. Plant physiology option from Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University. 1984.
Dissertation Title: Studies of in vitro
flowering and de novo flowers of Nicotiana tabacum.
M.S. Postharvest physiology from the Ohio State University.
August, 1979.
Thesis Title: Low pressure and controlled atmosphere
storage of plant tissue cultures.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Fall, 1999: Fulbright Scholar. Universidad de Talca in Talca, Chile. As a 1999 Fulbright Scholarship recipient, my second sabbatical leave was spent researching geophytes of Chile that have potential as new crops for the United States. I also taught an upper level plant propagation class.
1997-present: Professor and Head of the Plant Tissue Culture and Micropropagation Facility. The University of Connecticut. Duties include research and teaching in the areas of plant tissue culture, new plant development, and ornamental horticulture/floriculture. Administrative responsibilities for the University's Plant Tissue Culture and Micropropagation Facility and its non-profit micropropagation laboratory, ConnectiCulture. Adviser to the UConn Horticulture Club.
Fall, 1991: Research Scientist. The Danish Research Centre for Horticulture. At the invitation of the Danish Research Centre, I spent my sabbatical leave in Aarslev, Denmark teaching and researching in vitro techniques with Alstroemeria.
1991-96: Associate Professor and Co-Head of the Plant Biotechnology Facility. The University of Connecticut.
1984-91: Assistant Professor. The University of Connecticut.
1982-84: Teaching Associate. The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Responsibilities included the development, preparation and teaching of graduate level plant tissue culture laboratories.
1977-81: Research Associate. The Ohio State
University. Duties included the teaching laboratories and implementing
research programs with plant tissue culture.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Primary research interests are in the areas of new plant
development and breeding, plant-environment interactions, plant cell and
tissue culture, in vitro plant breeding, genetic modifications for
plant improvement, intensive plant production, and plant growth and development
of ornamental plants. Specific in vitro breeding techniques include
somaclonal and gametoclonal variation, embryo culture, somatic embryogenesis,
meristem culture for the production of pathogen-free plants and in vitro
fertilization. Studies on the growth and development of plants in vitro
are assisted by manipulating the environmental factors.
