Through a coordinated education effort, the University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension System, and Medical School, as well as the Connecticut Children's Medical Center have developed this program to improve the shopping practices and diet quality of low-income families with children with special health care needs. A pediatric nutritionist is working to increase awareness of pediatric health care providers in regards to the problems of food procurement of medially at-risk children. Approximately two percent of the pediatric population consists of children from low-income families who have special health care needs. Outreach efforts include workshops on nutrition for special needs children to families and health care providers.
