• Unprecedented Four Winners for Spignesi Memorial Scholarship
The James V. Spignesi, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a deserving student pursuing a career in conservation law enforcement or fisheries and wildlife management was for the first time awarded to not one, but four students in January 2009. Benjamin Gahagan, a master's graduate student majoring in natural resources, received the primary scholarship of $10,000. Elizabeth Clark, George Maynard and Daniel Watrous, undergraduate natural resources majors, received unprecedented secondary scholarships of $500 each. The Spignesi Memorial Scholarship is awarded by an interview panel consisting of Connecticut conservation law enforcement officers and surviving family of James V. Spignesi, Jr., a conservation officer who tragically died while on patrol in 1998.
