Dietetics Internship - Post Baccalaureate

The Dietetic Internship at the University of Connecticut is a post-baccalaureate certificate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education*.

Becoming a registered dietitian (RD) is a three step process:

  • Didactic Coursework ( To apply for an internship, the student must successfully complete an accredited didactic program in dietetics.)
  • Supervised Practice (dietetic internship
  • Pass the national registration examination.


During the internship program, students receive 1200 + hours of supervised practice in


  • Medical nutrition therapy
  • Community nutrition
  • Food service management
  • Research


The majority of clinical experience is at Hartford Hospital, an 867 bed urban acute care facility including a level 1 trauma center. The internship is 9 1/2 months and students earn six graduate credits.

In the state of Connecticut, an individual who is an RD may apply to the State Department of Public Health and become a Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist.

* The Dietetic Internship is granted accreditation by the Academy of Nutrition Dietetics's Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2190, Chicago, IL 60606-6695, (800) 877-1600. ACEND is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education.
