DIETETIC INTERNSHIP
THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT
The Dietetic Internship at the University of Connecticut is a post-baccalaureate certificate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education*.
Becoming a registered dietitian (RD) is a three step process:
- Didactic Coursework ( To apply for an internship, the student must successfully complete an accredited didactic program in dietetics.)
- Supervised Practice

- Pass the national registration examination.
During the internship program, students receive 1200 + hours of supervised practice in
- Medical nutrition therapy
- Community nutrition
- Food service management
- Research.
The majority of clinical experience is at Hartford Hospital, an 867 bed urban acute care facility including a level 1 trauma center. The internship is 9 ½ months and students earn six graduate credits.

In the state of Connecticut, an individual who is an RD may apply to the State Department of Public Health and become a Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist.
*The DI is granted accreditation by the American Dietetic Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6695, (800) 877-1600. CADE is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
