Declaring an Allied Health Sciences Major (FAQ)
Who declares an Allied Health Science major?
- Students who are unsure of their major but are interested in pursuing a career in Allied Health may choose to become an Allied Health Sciences major (AHS). AHS students work with advisors in the Allied Health Sciences Academic Advising Office to explore career options and decide on a major.
- Students seeking employment in the Health Care system.
- Students pursuing the Allied Health Sciences major as a baccalaureate program for admission to graduate health programs. Students may declare a concentration in Health Sciences, Health Promotion Sciences, or Occupational Saftey and Health to further define their major.
- Students pursuing a professional program declare themselves an AHS major during their first 3 semesters at UConn. Students are advised by an advisor in the AHS Advising Center who assists them in course selection and planning for admission to a professional program (Admission to a professional program is not guaranteed).
How do I declare an Allied Health Science major?
If you are a CURRENT UConn Student: Admission to the Allied Health Sciences (AHS) major does not require a supplemental application. However, students must complete a change of major form and submit supporting documentation as indicated below:
1) Petition deadline:
Students not admitted to the University as Allied Health Sciences majors
may petition into this major during the first two weeks of each
semester only. Deadline for petition is the 10th day of classes for the
semester. PLEASE NOTE: Students petitioning to this major in their junior or
senior year almost always require an additional semester or year to complete
requirements depending on how their prior coursework is applied to the major
and (if applicable) what graduate program admission requirements are
needed. Applicants are advised to keep this fact in mind when submitting a petition to change majors.
2) Petition requirements:
 1. Meet College of Agriculture and Natural Resources admission
 requirements
 2. Be in academic good standing (not on probation or subject to
 dismissal)
 3. Course requirements: At least one from each category; no grades
 less than a C-.
   1. CHEM 1122 or 1124Q or 1127Q
   2. BIOL 1107 or 1108
   3. MATH 1040Q or 1060Q or 1125Q or higher; or STATS
   1000Q or 1100Q
 4. Please note: Advanced science course work completed (2000-level and
 above) with grades less than a C may be cause for denial of admission.
3) GPA requirements:
a. Cum GPA:
 1. 2.0 GPA for Standard Plan
 2. 2.2 GPA to declare a concentration
b. Minimum of a 2.2 Math and science GPA. Students must submit an official
 transcript for any required courses taken in transfer in order to calculate the
 Math and Science GPA. Must include at least one course in each of the
 following categories:
 1. CHEM 1122 or 1124Q or 1127Q
 2. BIOL 1107 or 1108
 3. MATH 1040Q or 1060Q or 1125Q or higher; or STATS 1000Q
 or 1100Q
4) Submission requirements:
• Petition form
• Bio information form
• Unofficial transcript
• Official transcript from external University or College (only if required
coursework was taken in transfer)
• Personal statemen (typed)t: Indicate why you want to be an AHS major and
your career trajectory
• For students petitioning as a second degree or double major applicant, a
completed and signed additional or double major form must be submitted
with the petition. Please refer to your current School and College forms
page for the correct forms.

How do I declare a concentration?
To declare a concentration in Health Sciences, Health Promotion Sciences, or Occupational Saftey and Health within the Allied Health Sciences major, a student must:
- Be an Allied Health Sciences major or be eligible for admission to the Allied Health Sciences major
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.2 and be in good academic standing
- Completed at least one each: 1000-level college Biology, Chemistry and Math course
- Submit the following to the Department of Allied Health Sciences:
- Major/Advisor change form. Please click here.
- Unofficial UConn transcript (print from Peoplesoft)
- Personal Statement of intent (why you want to declare major and how it fits into your career goals)
