Open PositionsProfessor & Director of Functional Foods InitiativeThe Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Connecticut seeks candidates for the position of Professor of Nutritional Sciences & Director of Functional Foods Initiative, 75% Research and 25% Teaching, 10 month, tenure-track. The Position: The University of Connecticut is committed to establishing a multidisciplinary research, instruction, and outreach initiative in the area of functional foods and bioactive food components. New tenured/tenure track positions (including this one) are committed to the initiative, which are supported by an endowment and startup funding. The appointment of this individual is central to the establishment of this new initiative. After Board of Trustees’ approval, it is expected that the initiative will lead to the formation of a new university functional foods center. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will play a key role in establishing the mission, direction and oversight of the initiative and will be expected to guide and manage its future activities. In addition to its primary focus on basic research in the area of functional foods/bioactive food components and their mechanisms of action, the center will emphasize the transfer of research outcomes to industry and the public. The appointee is expected to liaise with department faculty and other researchers in seeking grants and contracts from federal agencies and industry. Responsibilities will also include teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and advising and mentoring graduate students. Incumbent may be required to work at the University of Connecticut's main campus located in Storrs, and/or the campuses at Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, Torrington, Waterbury, and West Hartford. Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in nutritional sciences, food sciences, or a related discipline. S/he should be a full professor, or be eligible for promotion to the rank of full professor, with a demonstrated record of outstanding research in the area of bioactive food components or functional foods. An ability to lead and manage a research team and build partnerships with industry and effective oral and written communication skills are essential. Preferred Qualifications: Candidates who understand the importance of the translation of basic research and public outreach are preferred. Related Information: This faculty appointment will be in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, which is one of eight departments in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; Establishing an independent funded research program on the health-promoting properties, mechanisms of action of nutrients and bioactive food components in relation to the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; advise/mentor undergraduate, masters and doctoral students; and provide professional and public service. At the undergraduate level, the Department offers programs in Nutritional Science and in Didactic Program in Dietetics. A food science minor is offered in collaboration with other departments in the College. Research programs include molecular and biochemical mechanisms of nutrient action and metabolism, bioactive food components and prevention of chronic diseases, and community-based research to assess dietary needs of at-risk populations. Outreach programs include nutrition, health, and food security and assistance targeted particularly to underserved populations and provide professional service to individuals, public agencies, and non-profit organizations.
