Graduation is now behind us and everyone has begun the transition to the summer season.
As we begin student summer orientation for the fall term, the College is projected to grow dramatically. Freshman enrollment is projected to increase by 50% and transfers are anticipated to increase as well. Overall, UConn expects record enrollment which will greatly impact class availability in a number of programs. The College will likewise be challenged in our high enrollment programs such as Animal Science and Allied Health. At the same time, we will begin to see the first Chinese students arrive as part of our new 3+2 program with Sichuan University and our joint MS program with Renmin University. If successful, these two programs are expected to increase dramatically by next fall with a portion of the tuition funds returning to the participating departments for program support.
The Young Building renovation is rapidly nearing completion. Construction should be essentially complete by July 1 and new furniture is expected to be delivered and installed in late July. Expected move-in is to begin about August 15. Having had the opportunity to tour the building recently, I can say that everyone should be very pleased with our newly renovated College home. Planning has begun for a rededication event in the early fall.
As part of the faculty hiring initiative, six new faculty members will be joining us this fall. Searches are underway for two additional positions approved as part of the eminent faculty initiative. With the approval of NextGen CT by the state legislature, new resources will be provided to UConn for support of STEM education. All schools and colleges will benefit from this new state investment in UConn.
A new five year Academic Plan is under development. Each school and college has been asked to form a planning committee which will work along with the campus committee. Our committee has been formed and is actively working on their charge from the campus committee. A progress report and draft Strengths and Opportunities document is due to the campus committee by June 30.
